How to get the most out of your sleep

Whether you haven't seen sleep in years (thanks kids!) you're prone to watching "just one more episode (four hours later) or you get 7-9 hours a night like clockwork (lucky you!) you might not be getting the most out of it.

If you’re feeling low on energy, or feel like those skin concerns aren’t going away, we have the answer: look to your sleep routine. With these four simple changes, you can get the most out of your zzz’s.

Switch off the blue lights

Blue light from our screens is known to interrupt our brain releasing melatonin (a hormone that regulates our natural sleep/wake cycle). When this process is interfered with, it results in a delayed response of our circadian rhythm and how much REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep we get. REM sleep is critical for the whole body to reset. If we don’t get enough of it, it can result in feeling lethargic.

Solution? Switch off the screens an hour before bed. That way the body can produce a  healthy amount of melatonin so we have the opportunity for a good sleep. Some ways to wind down without blue light could be reading a book, practising mindfulness or taking a long bath (perhaps it’s all three?).

Make the swap to silk pillowcases

Silk pillowcases are a sleeping saviour for the skin and hair. They’re hypoallergenic, so prevent bacteria build up that can contribute to skin problems such as acne, plus silk also won’t steal all the good stuff from your evening skin routine either because it doesn’t absorb moisture the way other fabric does.

Since the material is smooth and silky it doesn’t interrupt the skin’s delicate surface and prevents hair damage such as split ends, frizz and knots. That’s one less thing to worry about in the morning.

Change your sheets weekly

Even if you’re squeaky clean from showering before bed, you still need to change your sheets weekly. Here’s why: you spend hours each night sleeping which means sheets become a breeding ground for sweat, oil and other bacteria including dead skin cells and dust mites. This can trigger allergies or asthma and even some include skin reactions such as itchiness to acne.

Slather on some intense hydration

Make the most of sleep by incorporating a night mask or cream that works overnight. REM sleep also helps with recovering and repairing the skin, so it’s a perfect time to address skin concerns with a boost of potent ingredients.

Our Sleep + Glow Overnight Mask is designed specifically to work while you sleep, gently exfoliating, hydrating and brightening the skin. With a combination of clinically-proven ingredients like Fucogel, Hyaluronate and Superox-C with pure Kakadu Plum, you’ll wake with plump skin that really glows.
